Stefanía Benónísdóttir

Research Assistant Professor

Stefanía Benónísdóttir is an Assistant Research Professor at the School of Engineering and Natural Sciences at the University of Iceland. She completed her DPhil in statistical genetics at the University of Oxford in 2023 and has since conducted research focusing on statistical genetics, participation bias, and the development of disease prediction models at the University of Iceland and the University of Oxford. Before beginning her doctoral studies at Oxford, Stefanía worked as a specialist at Statistics Iceland and later as a researcher at deCODE genetics.

Chairman of the board

Sigrún Helga Lund

Sigrún Helga Lund is a Professor of Statistics at the Faculty of Physical Sciences at the University of Iceland and serves as the Chairman of the AI Center's board. She has extensive experience in biostatistics and epidemiology, having previously worked at deCODE genetics. Her research frequently involves analyzing complex datasets and clinical trials within health sciences.

Hrefna Dögg Gunnarsdóttir

Hrefna Dögg Gunnarsdóttir is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Iceland and serves as the Secretary of the AI Center's board. She specializes in privacy law, health law, and the ethical implications of big data and artificial intelligence. She holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, where her research focused on legal issues regarding the use of health data.

Hafsteinn Einarsson

Vice-Chairman

Hafsteinn Einarsson

Hafsteinn Einarsson is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Iceland and serves as the Vice Chairman of the AI Center. He holds a PhD from ETH Zurich and specializes in artificial intelligence and language technology, with a focus on developing models for the Icelandic language. In addition to his academic work, he chairs the Icelandic Association of Computer Scientists.

Elías Rafn Heimisson

Elías Rafn Heimisson is a Research Assistant Professor at the Institute of Earth Sciences at the University of Iceland and a board member of the AI Center. He holds a PhD in Geophysics from Stanford University and applies machine learning and numerical methods to study seismology and volcanology. His work includes developing forecasting models for magma propagation.

Lotta María Ellingsen

Lotta María Ellingsen is a Professor at the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Iceland and a board member of the AI Center. She holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and specializes in developing automatic image analysis pipelines, both classical and AI-based. Her research focuses on developing algorithms for automated brain image analysis to support the early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases.
