The Genesis Mission: A New AI and Science Initiative by the U.S. Department of Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy has launched the Genesis Mission, a major initiative aiming to leverage artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery and enhance energy security.

On November 24, 2025, the U.S. administration issued an executive order to launch the Genesis Mission. Led by the Department of Energy (DOE), the mission aims to integrate artificial intelligence, supercomputing, and quantum computing with the nation's research infrastructure. By connecting the DOE's 17 National Laboratories, the initiative intends to create the "American Science and Security Platform," utilizing massive datasets to train foundation models and develop automated research workflows. The project has been compared to the Manhattan Project in terms of its scale and ambition.

The stated goal of the Genesis Mission is to double the productivity of American science and engineering within a decade. The mission also aims to strengthen national security and ensure U.S. leadership in energy and technology. Dr. Darío Gil, Under Secretary for Science, has been appointed as the mission's director, leveraging the expertise of approximately 40,000 DOE scientists and engineers alongside collaborations with the private sector and academia.
